La Matraca is a traditional mexican restaurant located on St-Denis. It has a fast food style and therefore is not fancy, it is the perfect place to go to if you are feeling for a casual dinner with some good traditional food. The dishes are made small so it is preferable if you go with a group so you can try multiple dishes which is the concept of this place. They definitely don't specialize in service seeing as our waitress barely spoke english, this did make the experience more interesting though because we all tried speaking Spanish! They are keen on keeping the traditional style of the food you would typically find in Mexico therefore they do not sell the stereo-typical mexican food that you may expect there to be. They have a wall of fun facts about mexican food on their wall which is also interesting to read. All of our dishes exceeded our expectations, the service was fast and that didn't take away from the quality. Since it is a somewhat fast food restaurant the dishes did not necessarily have the nicest display but the taste made up for it! Our favorite dish was the Flautitas which are mini fajitas stuffed with beef which are fried and topped with dressing, cheese and accompanied with a bean sauce.
3 sauces given to go with every dish
Queso Fundido
(melted cheese served in a small pot accompanied with tortillas)
Choriqueso
(home made mexican sausage mixed with melted cheese accompanied with tortillas)
Flautitas
(miniature fried tacos garnished with mozzarella cheese and "anejo" cheese, sour cream and a touch of salsa accompanied with black fried beans)
Chorizo
(Taco with hashed pork marinated with peppers and mexican spices, coriander topping which is accompanied with a lime)
Gringa
(Wheat tortilla with pastor meat topped with a fine layer of grilled cheese, served with a bit of coriander and onions)
Quesadilla
(Wheat tortilla folded in two stuffed with "Oaxaca" cheese and beef)
